Michelle, Auckland (2022)
Michelle is studying towards a Bachelor of Laws at AUT. Alexandra, Auckland (2022) Alexandra is studying full-time for her Bachelor of Nursing at the Manukau Institute of Technology. Kathy, Carterton (2022) Kathy is in her third year of Bachelor of Nursing at Universal College of Learning in the Wairarapa. Ilaisaane, Ashburton (2022) Ilaisaane is studying part time towards her NZ Diploma in Business (Human Resource Management) at the Otago Polytech via eCampus NZ. Sadia, Auckland (2022) Sadia is in her second year at the University of Waikato studying towards a Bachelor of Laws. Sarah, New Plymouth (2022) Sarah is studying towards a NZ Diploma in Construction Management & Quantity Surveying at the Western Institute of Technology. Holly, Kaitaia (2020)
Holly is about to complete her third year of a Bachelor of Nursing at Northtec. Holly’s application showed a deep affinity with our Soroptimist aim of being the ‘best for women’, and her strong desire to be a positive role model for her daughter, and all girls and women in her community, showing them how hard work and determination can make dreams a reality.
Holly has raised four ‘happy and healthy’ children, actively involved in sports, rugby and dancing. Holly and her family are active volunteers in their local church, school and sports groups.
Holly is about to complete her third year of a Bachelor of Nursing at Northtec. Janice, Hokitika (2020)
Janice is studying towards a Bachelor of teaching and learning at the University of Christchurch, after which she plans to gain her teacher’s registration. She also hopes to complete further post-graduate papers in special education. Janice is also a heavily involved in her local community, volunteering with the local cubs, and helping with the SPCA. She is also the South Island coordinator for May Hounds, a greyhound rehoming group, and so far she has found new homes for over 17 retired racing greyhounds.

Charlene delayed her studies for several years to focus on raising “four amazing children” who are active volunteers in their community and sharing their enjoyment of exercise, healthy eating and wellbeing with their friends.

Annie is studying for a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in psychology, at Massey University. After graduation she plans to complete a teaching diploma, and hopes to become a social sciences teacher. She has overcome many challenges to finally commence her dream of gaining a degree, and paid tribute to the loving support of her husband and children in supporting her to embark on this academic journey.

Naada, Hawkes Bay, (2018)
Naada is currently studying for a Masters of Psychology at Massey University by distant learning. The BLSS Trustees were very impressed with Naada’s life journey and her very considered approach to her studies. Naada was presented with her scholarship certificate by SI Palmerston North.

Renee, Wairarapa, (2017)
Renee is enrolled in Bachelor of Midwifery at Otago University (Wellington Campus). Her aim is to become an independent midwife, serving the rural population of her home region, and she also plans to spend some time volunteering to assist midwives in Vanuatu. Renee was attracted to midwifery as she believes women are the Te Whare Tangata (the House of the People), and that midwives have an immense privilege and responsibility to help women through their precious childbearing journey. Renee currently volunteers in several community organisations that support mothers and babies.

Adrienne, Palmerston North (2017)
Adrienne is a career changing student who has spent many years as the ‘lone woman’ in a man’s world, working in fields such as commercial fishing, forestry, heavy haulage and construction. Having spent the last decades working and raising her family, Adrienne decided to finally pursue her life-long dream of becoming a nurse and is now studying for a Bachelor of Nursing degree at UCOL in Palmerston North. In her application she notes “I knew going to study was going to be a challenge mentally and financially and I felt it was time for me to embrace that”. Adrienne hopes to specialise in mental health, with a focus on youth, and plans to work overseas in emergency management, helping in war-torn areas providing humanitarian or disaster relief. |

Donna, Waitara (2016)
Donna is enrolled in Bachelor of Health Science Midwifery programme at Auckland University of Technology (AUT). Donna has four young children, and lives in small rural community with no public transport, childcare facilities or high speed internet. Donna has extensive community volunteer experience with Playcentre, holding many positions, and strong community links from her background as a parent and community volunteer, which will help her in good stead when she begins her work as a midwife with women and families.

Sumu is currently enrolled in the Masters of Development studies at Victoria University of Wellington. Sumu has a Bachelor degree in Commerce and Administration and subsequently worked in IT consulting at a corporate consultancy firm; while there she worked to set up a Staff Charitable Trust.
Sumu has an extensive volunteer experience, she volunteers at Suzanne Aubert Compassion Centre &the Mary Potter Hospice. She has a strong interest in women’s rights as part of her Masters she will work in Kolkata in an Anti trafficking and Rescue & Rehabilitation area; her long term goal is to establish an NGO which supports the promotion & honouring of the human rights of women especially in relation to human trafficking and modern slavery.

Beth, Lower Hutt (2016)
Beth is completing a Bachelor of Commerce at the University of Victoria. As a young solo parent of two, gaining a tertiary degree was a goal that motivated her to complete her secondary education. Beth is also involved in several volunteer community organisations, including "Babywearing Wellington” (which she helped set up) and La Leche League. She is involved with the Mothers Network with the focus of helping mothers connect and overcome obstacles. Beth is also a member of 2 cooperatives that distribute organic produce supporting ethical practices. |
